約二年半後に帰国した時、東海道の古い宿屋で、ニューヨーク・フィルの指揮者のバーンスタインと一緒に、懐かしい畳に座ってしみじみと海の音を聞いた。床の間には枯れ葉のついた盆栽があった。その時、
「セイジ、おまえは幸福な奴だ。こんな美しい国で育ったなんて・・・・・。それなのに何でニューヨークなどに住む気になったんだい？」
バーンスタインはいぶかし気にそうぼくに聞いた。彼が疑問に思うのも無理はない。それほど日本の景色は美しくてみずみずしさに満ちているのだから・・・・・。
